Hooded Cut
Looking for a different fruiting style? The hooded method is a great way to encourage even growth across the top surface of your grow bag making a beautiful canopy of gourmets. It gives your mushrooms room to breathe and creates a natural “mini-environment” under the plastic hood.
Here’s how to do it:
Sterilize your cutting tool
As always, cleanliness is key! Use isopropyl alcohol to sterilize your scissors or knife.
Make a ¾ cut around the front face of the bag
Start on one side above your mushroom block, curve across the front, and stop from the other side — this will create your “hood.”
Gently clean off any excess mycelium along the edge of the cut
This keeps the growing surface clear and gives your mushrooms space to fruit
Pull the plastic flap (your “hood”) over the top of the bag
This helps maintain humidity and gives the mushrooms room to develop right on the surface
Setting Up for Fruiting
Once your hood is in place, position the grow bag in a shady, well-ventilated area with indirect light. Mist the surface when needed, to keep grow block from drying out.
Misting Tip: Try using a fine spray bottle and mist up to 1–2 times a day depending on humidity levels in your space.
Growth Expectations
The hooded method works well for species that prefer to grow in clusters or across a flat surface.
