The Best Way to Store Fresh Mushrooms

Keep your mushrooms in the box they came in or transfer them to a paper bag as soon as you get home. Mushrooms love to breathe! Paper allows air to circulate and helps absorb excess moisture—keeping sliminess at bay.

If you don’t have a paper bag handy, you can also use a container lined with paper towels. Just make sure the lid isn’t airtight; mushrooms like a little airflow.

Avoid:

  • ❌ Plastic bags – they trap moisture and speed up spoilage.

  • ❌ The crisper drawer – it’s too humid for mushrooms and can make them mushy fast.

Moisture Control is Everything

Mushrooms naturally release moisture, so controlling humidity is crucial. A dry storage setup = longer-lasting mushrooms!

  • Use paper towels to line containers and absorb dampness.

  • Never wash/soak mushrooms —extra moisture shortens their shelf life (to clean we simply brush off any substrate)

Other Storage & Preservation Methods

If you’ve got more mushrooms than you can use in a few days, don’t worry! Here are some preservation methods to keep them around longer:

Drying

Use a dehydrator or low oven heat to dry your mushrooms. Store them in an airtight container in a cool, dark place, and they’ll last for months! Just rehydrate in warm water before cooking.

Freezing

Want to freeze your mushrooms? Cook them first! Steam or sauté to stop the maturation process and help preserve texture and flavor.

  • Spread cooked mushrooms on a baking sheet and flash freeze.

  • Then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container.

This method keeps them from sticking together and prevents that unwanted rubbery texture.

Pickling

Yes, you can pickle mushrooms! This is a fun and flavorful way to preserve them. (Try your favorite brine recipe or explore traditional ones—you’ll be surprised how tasty they are!)

Quick Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Refrigerate ASAP after bringing your mushrooms home.

  • Don’t store near strong-smelling foods—mushrooms absorb odors easily.

  • If your washing, wait until right before cooking.

By treating your Shroomies right, you’ll enjoy them at peak flavor—whether you’re slicing them into stir-fry, tossing them on pizza, or starring them in a fancy mushroom risotto~

Here’s to fresh flavors, fun cooking, and all the mushroom magic!
